Morphological Studies on the Development of the Maxillary Sinus in Korean Fetus

Abstract
With the histological method, development of maxillary sinus was studied on 50 cases of Korean fetuses varying in C. R. length of 1.5 to 27 cm. Followings were the results of these observations.
1. At 1.5 cm. C. R. length, the nasal chambers communicated freely with oral cavity and the lateral walls of the chambers lined by, primitive nasal mucosa showed the indication of maxillo- and ethmo-turbinals. At 3-3.5 cm. C. R. length, the formation of the palate by fusion of the palatal, shelves became complete and two shallow invaginations of; nasal mucosa, (Primary grooves of maxillary and frontal recess) were recognized in the lateral walls of the nasal chambers.
2. At 4.1 cm. C. R. length, from the, caudal end of the maxillary recess, .tubular extensions of its lining epithelium into the mesenchymal sub mucosa, were often. Noted and mesenchymal tissue surrounding the cartilage appeared to proliferate at the junctional area between trabecullated bone; and cartilagenous sac, toward which invagination of the maxillary recess was proceeding and gaining its capacity. At, 27 cm. C. R. length, maxillary sinus became elliptical in shape with its long axis being vertical.
3. 5-7 cm. C.R. length, epithelial cells lining respiratory area of nasal cavity had cilia, and goblet type cells in the mucosa and tubular glands in the submucosa made their first appearance in the walls of nasal cavity and of sinuses.
4. At 1.5-3.0 cm. C. R. length, cartilages in the wall of nasal chambers were blastemal, which completed chondrification at 4.1 cm. C. R. length and ossification of maxillary turbinate and cartilagenous nasal sac were completed at about 24 cm C. R. length, although ossification in uncinate process and ethmo-turbinals proceeded until up to 27 cm. C. R. length of the fetus.
